process using multiple X-rays scans to produce images of slices through the body in one plane to produce a 3d image

- A thin fan shaped X-ray is produced which is very thin in height
- it rotates around the patient and in 1 revolution it has gained 1 cm in height and then that is 1 slice
- then computer compresses it all down

advantages of CAT scans
A
provide doctors with very accurate picture of the position of the internal organs without being obscured by other structures in the body
