what are the main pig respiratory diseases?
Atrophic Rhinitis
* *Bordetella bronchisepticia/ Pasteurella *
* necrosis of the inside of the nose
* Contagious spread
* Sneezing, bloody nose, distortion of nose, nose bleeds
* Vaccination available
* Treatment – antibiotics, increase humidity, NSAIDs
Pneumonia:
* Coughing, lethargy, pyrexic, difficulty breathing
** Mycoplasma, Pasteurella *
* Antibiotics
* Actinobacillus – carrier status with no clinical signs
* Sudden death, coughing, pyrexic, lethargy
* Chronic lung damage

Salmonella/Enterocolitis
* Samonella typhimurium / choleraesuis
* Contamination – waste feed, pig to pig spread
* D++ +/- blood +/- mucus
* Pyrexic, lethargic, signs of sepsis – discolouration of extremities
* Antibiotics +/= fluids +/- supportive nursing care
* ZOONOTIC
what pathogens can cause bacterial menengitis in pigs?
- Strep, Salmonella, Ecoli
what are the causes, signs and treatment for salt poisoning in pigs?
- causes: No water for extended hours then sudden water consumption or High volumes of high salt feed – less common
- signs: Seizures, walking aimlessly, blindness, abnormal sitting
- Treatment – gradual rehydration, reduce brain swelling
