- deficits in swallowing

- Function – tetanus, botulism (should be vaccinated with clostridium vaccine)
- Irritation to oral cavity – ulcerative stomatitis, glossitis, malocclusion, FB, choke, megaoesophagus
- Generalised weakness
- Toxicity ingestion – fungus’s in forage
what is Ptyalism, Pseudoptyalism and Cud Spilling
Ptyalism - the production of too much saliva,
Pseudoptyalism - the apperance of the productino of too much saliva but there is not acctually any more being produced
Cud Spilling - spilling of cud out of the mouth
what is the treatment for gastric atony/anorexia in alpacas?
Anorexia for 3-5 days = death of bacteria and protozoa in C1 and C2 – requires transfaunation
◦ take fluid from healthy alpaca and give to sick one
what are the causes of of diarrhoea in adult alpacas?
- Feed changes
- Eosinophilic enteritis
- Eimeria
- Mycobacterium paratuberculosis – fatal;
- Parasites
what are the causes of diarrhoea in cria?
- Milk scour
- Diet change – can lead to blockage of spiral colon and colic
- Rotavirus
- Coronavirus
- Cryptosporidium
- E. coli
- Eimeria – around weaning – stress induced
- Giardia
- Yersinia pseudotubercululosis
- Salmonella
what is the treatment and reasoning for C3 and proximal doudenal ulcers in alpacas?
IV Pantopazole or Omeprazole to increase C3 pH - can’t give oral as will just sit in C1 (rumen)
+/- blood transfusion
what are the main endoparasites that affect alpacas?
- Nematodirus
- Haemonchus
- Liver fluke
- Coccidiosis
- Lung worm
- Cryptosproidium
whu must alpacs at risk of liver fluke be vaccinated, what vaccine do they need?
- Must be up to date with clostridial vaccinations
