Pesticide Metabolism Flashcards
What’s the process of mammalian metabolism?
ADME
Adsorption
Distribution
Metabolism
Excretion
Phase 1 metabolism
Phase I
- oxidation
- add a polar group to the pesticide
Now it’s inactivated
CYP enzymes do the oxidizing
How do some pesticides trick phase 1 metabolism?
Some pesticides aren’t activated UNTIL they’re oxidized to use metabolism against the plants. Thus isn’t very common though
Phase 2 metabolism
Phase 2
- add a water soluble thing to it so it can get excreted more easily
Glucose
- makes it easier for the liver to pick up
How do plant and animal metabolism differ?
- Animals have a better circulatory system
- Plants don’t have kidneys
- Therefore plants have to do phase 3 metabolism
Phase 3 metabolism
- sequestration
- keep it away from important parts of the cell
- often stored in vacuole or cell wall
Phytoremediation
Uses phase 3 metabolism to pull toxins out of the soil and fix them in the plant
Still have to remove plant material because even through the pesticide is sequestered, it’s still there so if the plant dies, it goes back to the soil
