Perspectives Flashcards
How did some view the multiculturalism act? How would it affect certain groups identity and national identity?
The act was highly controversial.
For example:
Quebec OPPOSED the act because from their perspective multiculturalism made all cultures in Canada equal, and they felt that some were more important than others. There were scared that it would sabotage/weaken francophone identity
- Some Canadians felt that it would erode Canadian identity by encouraging minorities to preserve or keep practicing their languages and cultures. If they continued to do this they felt that it discouraged many newcomers to adopt Canadian ways/values/
what is the best way to create unity in Canada? (perspective)
I think pluralism is the best way because it actively goes about doing something about the diversity in Canada through ways like elarning, practicing, celebrating, and educating yourself. Multiculturalism is just living together and accepting one another but sometimes that can make you strangers in your own society. Pluralism is a strategy to get you to FEEL a persons way of life to be connected on a deeper level and strengthen unity in Canada.
