Meech Lake Accord was a proposal to solution to what issue?
Response to Quebecs exclusion, this accord was designed to recognize quebec as a distinct society within Canada and granting them more power. Quebec had these demands to increase provincial power.
why did meech lake accord fail?
Manitoba and Newfoundland did not ratify this accord so it failed an deepened the disconnection between Canada and Quebec and led to Quebec wanting to become separate from Canada (referendum)
Indigenous people trying to get self-determination
In the 1982 Constitution self-determination of Indigenous peoples/metis was acknowledged. This didnt mean that Indigenous peoples were fully autonomous. They were Independent in the sense that they could pick their own government, determine the needs of communities, and use their land the way they wanted. But yet they still dont have the power to police themselves, provide justice systems, or determine the curriculum for their children’s education.

Metis Self-governance act:
- recognizing the Métis Nation as a distinct group with the right to make decisions for themselves, just like other Indigenous peoples in Canada. This act came with Metis people pushing for rights in the Constitution
Nunavut Land Claims Agreement:
- represented many Inuit and covered large sections of land. This was aimed towards giving Inuit people more control over their land and what they could do with it. This encouraged self-relaince.
