Henri Bourassa
Key figure in Quebec political history. He promoted French Canadian Identity, and fought for Quebec’s cultural rights. Mainly known for his strong OPPOSITION towards conscription in world war one and felt that the french military service should not be forced to go to war. He was highly respected for his resistance against conscription. This deepened conflict between English and french Canadians.
Pierre Trudeau
He envisioned Canadian nation to be primarily inclusive, united, and progressive. He wanted everyone to be respected, he wanted to make sure different ethnic groups in Canada were celebrated and recognized, he encouraged maintaining of your cultural identity, he wanted to make sure there was no division and Canada
(e.g. multiculturalism act, bilingualism act, respect french identity and concerns).
Louis Riel
Seen as a leader for Metis people who advocated for their rights. He was born in red river and as he got older he started to play major roles in Metis bill of rights and red river rebellion which made governments mad. He was seen as a hero to many Metis people and he became a symbol for metis national identity for resistance against the Canadian government
Clifford Sifton
Shaped Canadian immigration policy during his time of minister of the west. His goal was to populate more immigrants in Canada’s west to grow the prairie into an agricultural land that was highly productive.
