The different levels of consciousness
Conscious- immediate awareness
Preconscious- accessible memories
Unconscious- repressed trauma which influences behaviour despite person being unaware of underlying influences.

Slips of the tongue Free association (laying on the couch encouraged to speak aloud their thoughts). Projective tests (inkblots in the Rorschach test).

Eros- life (survival, pleasure and reproduction)
Thanatos- death (aggression)

Ego- reality principle
Id- pleasure principle (instincts)
Superego- moral principle (morality)

The significance of ‘ego anxiety’
This occurs when the ego cannot resolve the conflict of the superego and the id.
This can result in mental health problems e.g. depression

How does this perspective link to Freud’s study on little Hans?
His behaviours (phobias and fantasies) are arising from unconscious forces, in this case the psychosexual stages of development.
