but remember, they distrust everyone, not just spouse, not a simple single delusion.
Contrast schizoid and schizotypal PD
schizoid: no desire to be around other people
schizotypal: magical thinking, weird hobbies, no friends
Cluster A PDs are more common in males or females?
-males
What distinguishes antisocial PD from simply being a criminal?
- not diagnosed before 18, but criminal like behavior is often present in childhood (ie hurting animals)
- patient has no remorse for their actions
- patient is charming and manipulative
- behavior doesn’t occur only secondary to substance use
Describe behaviors seen in Borderline PD
- splitting
- threats/attempts to commit suicide
- unstable relationships
- frantic efforts to avoid abandonment
Contrast BPD with Bipolar type 2
- hypomanic episodes in BP2 last a few days and don’t have an identifiable trigger
- mood in BPD are brief/rapid and often have external or psych trigger
Describe behaviors seen in histrionicPD
- attention seeking
- flamboyant
- sexually inappropriate
Which patient is often more “stable”: BPD or HPD?
-HPD, BPD more likely to self harm
Defense mechanism seen in HPD
regression
Contrast narcissistic PD with antisocial PD
- NPD = taking advantage of others to gain status or recognition
- APD= harming others for material gain or souly for subjugation of others
Avoidant PD has significant overlap with what other disorder?
social anxiety disorder/social phobia
**and note that patients can carry BOTH diagnoses
Contrast avoidant PD with SAD
- avoidant PD is lifelong and stems from fear of rejection
- SAD may be transient and stems from fear of public embarrassment as opposed to complete “rejection”
What medication might be prescribed in avoidant PD?
-SSRI esp if patient has comorbid SAD
Contrast avoidant PD and schizoid PD.
avoidant wants relationship but fears rejection
schizoid has no desire for relationship
Defense mechanism seen in Dependent PD?
-regression, like in histrionic PD
both are attention seeking to some degree
Are men or women more likely to be diagnosed with DPD?
-women
What separates OCPD from being Leah or Melissa?
-So preoccupied with order and detail that they FAIL TO COMPLETE TASK AND LACK INTERPERSONAL SKILLS.
