Personality Flashcards
Hollander’s model (1971)
Interactionist theory
Suggested that out personality is a layered structure:
Inner core- beliefs, values, attitudes
Middle layer- shows our typical responses
Role related behaviour- our actual responses
Social environment- peers, situation, coaches, significant others
Give an example of what would be in the inner core of Hollanders model
Eg if a hockey player beloved there’s never an excuse for violence then she is unlikely to behave violently
Lewin (1935)
Interactionist theory
Behaviour is a function of personality and the environment
Different people behave differently in the same environment
B=f(PxE)
Eysenck (1967)
Trait theory
2 dimensions of personality:
Introversion-extroversion
Neurotism- emotional stability
Our behaviour is determined by our traits and not the environment
Introvert characteristics
Quiet, shy
Extrovert characteristic
Outgoing, confident
Neurotic characteristics
Unpredictable behaviour
Emotionally stable characteristics
Consistent
Social learning theory
We learn to deal with situations by watching others
Eg learning to become angry after a valid referee decision has gone against them after watching other players do the same
Profile of mood states definition
A way of measuring the moods of those who participate in sport
What does the profile of mood states measure?
Tension Depression Anger Vigour Fatigue Confusion
Iceberg profile
The POMS profile that is associated with successful athletes
Higher levels of vigour
Lower levels of other undesirable characteristics
Weakness of the POMS profile
Not all elite performers in every sport show an iceberg profile
Credulous view of personality
Argue that an individual’s personality has an influence on their sporting success
Sceptical view of personality
Personality had no relevance to sporting performance
