charchter types
i. the “sublimatory character types” tend to be normal, and involve a free discharge of instinctual energy (such as discharging aggression through sports); replacement of an existing instinctual impulse with an impulse that is compatible with the ego
ii. reactive character types are pathologic and are subdivided into phobic attitudes (avoidance/escape from awareness of instinctual demands) and reaction formations (attitudes in opposition in an attempt to suppress instinctual impulses; counter-cathexis; ex. combating pornography because fearful of own sexual urges)
iii. based on work of Otto Fenichel
