Definition of personality
An individuals unique characteristics which make them behave differently in sporting situations
What is the nature trait theory ?
We are born with innate characteristics called traits.
They are stable constant and enduring
Extroverted people will always give their opinion and be loud
Personality can change with situations, we can change our personality with experience
What is nurture ?
Suggests behaviour is learned from significant others by socialisation
We learn from people we hold in high esteem
What is socialisation ?
Developing traits by associating and learning from others
What are the 2 types of socialisation ?
Primary - from our family
Secondary - school, media
We copy behaviour we see as successful and powerful and That is constantly shown to us

What is the interactive perspective ?
A theory which combines traits and social learning to predict behaviour in specific situations. This indicates that born traits are adapted according to the situation
What is the formula for the interaction perspective ?
B = F(P x E)
Behaviour is a function of personality and environment
What is the Hollander approach ?
Suggests that personality are made up from 3 characteristics
- the core of the performer
- Typical response
- Role related behaviour
It also suggests that the more the environment has an influence the more likely behaviour is about to change
What is the credulous approach ?
You believe the theories. You accept a link that personality can predict behaviour
What is the sceptical approach ?
You don’t believe them. You doubt the link that personality can predict behaviour
