Attrubtion Theory Flashcards
Definition of attribution

What is the locus of causality ?
Is it in the control of the performer (internal) or out of their control (external)
Internal attribute - within the performers control - effort
External attribute - outside the performers control - the referee
What is the stability dimension ?
Is it a permanent or changeable reason
Unstable attribute - can change in a short amount of time - luck
Stable attribute - unlikely to change in a short amount of time - quality of team
What factors effect attribution ?

What is self serving bias ?
Using external and or unstable reason for losing
What is an example of internal unstable

What is an example of internal stable ?
Ability - If used reduces confidence and motivation. Learned helplessness
What is an example of external unstable ?
Luck - If used maintains motivation and confidence
What is an example of external stable ?
Task difficulty - maintains motivation and confidence
What is learned helplessness ?
Using internal stable reasons for losing - I’m not good enough and never will be
- the performer views failure as inevitable
- Lack of motivation and effort
What are the 2 types of learned helplessness ?
Global / general learning helplessness
Specific / situational learned helplessness
