Personal Investigation 1 Flashcards
Define sleep
A periodic, natural, reversible and near total loss of consciousness
What is the experimental hypothesis?
There will be an increase in sleep quality out of 21 on the PSQI for teens(13-18 years old) compared to adults(19years+)
What is the dependent variable?
Pittsburgh sleep quality index score out of 21
Give four examples of confounding variables and how to control for them
- Sleep disorders
- Stress levels
- Caffiene levels
- Medical isssues
Ask P’s about CVs and eliminate any P’s with them
Give three examples of extraneous variables and how to control for them
- Time of the year
- Temperature
- Time of the day
Ask P’s to complete the PSQI at the same time
What is the experimental design and why?
Independent measures as participants can’t be both an adult and teen
What was the samppling method used and what are the strenght/limitations?
Opportunity sampling
* Strengths=Large sample collected/Quicker than random/don’t have to obtain a full list of target population
* Limitations=Not always representative of target population/Participants share similar characteristics
What is the descriptive statistic used and graphical representation?
Mean and a bar graph because we have nominal level data
What is the inferential statistic used?
Mann whitney U
What conclusions can be drawn from your findings?
In conclusion, there are no significant differences between teens and adulys on the PSQI measure of sleep quality
