Peritoneal Dialysis Flashcards
With Peritoneal dialysis, the peritoneal membrane is used as what ?
As a filter
What kind of catheter is used in Peritoneal Dialysis ?
Tenckhoff catheter
In Peritoneal Dialysis, Dialysate is infused into the peritoneal cavity by gravity via a what ?
Tenckhoff catheter
In Peritoneal dialysis, how much fluid fills the peritoneal cavity ?
2000 - 2500 mLs
In peritoneal dialysis, what is the dwell time ?
The prescribed amount of time that the fluid remains in the peritoneal cavity
With peritoneal dialysis, the bag is lowered and the fluid , along with the toxins, etc. are drained. Approximately how long does this take ?
15 to 30 minutes
With Peritoneal dialysis, what is the entire process called ?
An Exchange
Why do we warm the fluid for Peritoneal dialysis ?
B/c cold fluid promotes vasoconstriction which limits blood flow
Why do we want Warm fluid used with peritoneal dialysis ?
B/c it promotes vasodilation and more blood flow
What should peritoneal drainage look like ?
clear, straw colored
(should be able to read a newspaper through the drainage/effluent)
Cloudy = infection
With Peritoneal dialysis, what should you do if the fluid doesn’t come out ?
Turn side to side
What type of client gets peritoneal dialysis ?
Someone who can’t tolerate Hemodialysis or someone who chooses peritoneal
What are the two types of Peritoneal Dialysis ?
- ) CAPD (Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis
2. ) APD (Automated Peritoneal Dialysis
With Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD), you must have a client that has the what ?
The energy and the desire to be active in their treatment
&
that also has the ability to learn and follow instructions
How often Is Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) done ?
Done 4x a day, 7 days a week
Could a client with Disc disease or arthritis do Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) ? and why ?
No
B/c fluid causes pressure on the back
Could a client with a colostomy do Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) ? and why ?
No
B/c there is a High risk for infection
How does Automated Peritoneal Dialysis (APD) work ?
Client’s connect their peritoneal dialysis catheter to a cycler at night and their exchange is done automatically while they sleep and Disconnected in the AM.
With which type of Peritoneal dialysis does the client have more freedom ?
Automated Peritoneal Dialysis (APD)
What are complications of Peritoneal Dialysis ?
- Exit site infection
- Major complication is Peritonitis
What are signs and symptoms of complications of Peritoneal Dialysis ?
- Abdominal pain
- Cloudy effluent
What do the dietary needs look like for a Peritoneal Dialysis client ?
Need to increase Fiber and Protein in the diet
Why do clients receiving Peritoneal Dialysis need increased Fiber in the diet ?
B/c they have decreased peristalsis due to abdominal fluid
Why do clients receiving Peritoneal Dialysis need increased Protein in the diet ?
B/c there are big holes in the peritoneum and they loose protein with each exchange
