Glomerulonephritis Flashcards
What is Glomerulonephritis ?
Inflammation of the filtering part of the kidneys
Glomerulo = filtering
Nephew = kidney
It is = inflammation
Glomerulonephritis is ________ can lead to _________
Acute can lead to chronic
What is the Pathophysiology of Glomerulonephritis ?
a. ) Inflammatory reaction in the glomerulus
b. ) Antibodies lodge in the glomerulus; causing scarring and decreased filtering
c. ) main cause is Strep (Group A beta hemolytic)
What is the main cause of Glomerulonephritis ?
Strep (Group A beta hemolytics)
Strep affects what organs ?
- Heart (valves)
- Kidneys (glomerulus)
What are signs and symptoms of Glomerulonephritis ?
- Flank pain (CVA tenderness)
- Oliguria (decreased urinary output)
- Hematuria (blood in urine)
- Proteinuria
- Periorbital edema (which progresses to other areas of body)
- Increased BP
- Fluid volume excess
- Increased urine specific gravity
- Azotemia (abnormally high BUN & Creatinine)
- Malaise & Headache (toxins)
What are the Treatment’s for Glomerulonephritis ?
- Get rid of the Strep or cause
- I&O
- Daily weights
- Diuretics
- Monitor BP
- Restrict fluids
- Balance activity and rest
- Dietary needs
- Dialysis
What are the Dietary needs for a client with Glomerulonephritis ?
Increased Carbs
Decreased Sodium and Potassium
How is fluid replacement determined ?
Fluid replacement = 24 hour fluid loss + 500ml
500mL is for insensible losses –> what we can’t measure
Client Teaching: Glomerulonephritis
Diuresis begans when ?
In 1 to 3 weeks after onset
Client Teaching: Glomerulonephritis
In a client with Glomerulonephritis, how long may blood and protein stay in the blood ?
For months
Client Teaching: Glomerulonephritis
What do we want to teach client’s with Glomerulonephritis ?
Teach signs and symptoms of Renal failure
What are the sign and symptoms of renal failure ?
- Malaise
- Headache
- Anorexia
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Decreased output
- Weight gain
*notify PCP if above symptoms are present
