Peritoneal Cavity Flashcards
1
Q
What is the peritoneum?
A
- Serous membrane lining the abdominal/pelvic cavities
- Covers intra-abdominal organs
- Secretes small amount of fluid–>lubricates = movement of viscera
2
Q
What are the 2 layers of Peritoneum?
A
- Parietal: lining walls of abdomen & pelvis
- Visceral: covers organs
- Peritoneal cavity: potential space between 2 layers
3
Q
Peritoneal Fluid
A
- Lubricates
- Contains leucocytes & antibodies which resist infection
4
Q
What is the greater omentum?
A
- Extends from lower edge of stomach (greater curvature) folds back to attach to peritoneum covering transverse colon
- Prevents visceral & parietal layers from fusing
5
Q
Compartments?
A
- Supracolic = stomach, liver & spleen
- Infracolic= Intestines
6
Q
What is the mesentery?
A
- Exposes intestines below the greater omentum
- Small intestine is attached to posterior abdominal wall by mesentery
- “small bowel”
7
Q
Greater Sac
A
- Serous sac that lines the abdominal cavity covers most of viscera
- Peritoneal
8
Q
Omental Bursa
A
- Lesser sac
- Movement & distension of stomach
- Potential space w/clinical implications
9
Q
Lesser omentum
A
- Connected to lesser curvature of stomach, gallbladder, and liver
- Made by heptoduodenal ligament (portal triad) & Hepatogastric ligament located on inferior side of liver
10
Q
Boundaries of lesser sac are?
A
- Anterior= stomach
- Posterior= Pancreas & aorta
- Left = Spleen & its ligaments
- Right = Opening to lesser sac (foramen of Winslow)
11
Q
Clinical Applications of Lesser Sac
A
- Ulcer on post. wall of stomach perforate into the sac = fill w/stomach contents
- Infection = pancreas fluid collecting in lesser sac = Large swelling = Pseudocyst
12
Q
Peritoneal reflections
A
- In males: reflects from bladder & seminal glands into rectum = rectovesical pouch
- Female: reflects from bladder & body of uterus = vesicouterine pouch / reflects from vagina onto rectum = rectouterine pouch
