Peripheral Vascular system assessment Flashcards
What is assessed
BP
palpating peripheral pulses
inspecting skin and tissues for perfusion
When palpating peripheral pulses compare each arm by
palpating both at the same time
If you cant palp a pulse use a
doppler ultrasound probe
When assessing peripheral veins inspect the
arms and legs for edema and erythema
legs veins for phlebitis
How do you check the legs for phlebitis
inspect calves for edema and redness palp calves for tense muscles palp and inspect dorsum of the foot for edema Push calves side to side for tenderness perform a Homans test
How to assess perfusion
capillary refill test
inspect the skin of the hands and feet for edema and hyperpigmentation
How do you do the capillary refill test
squeeze at least 1 finger or toe on each limb between your index finger and thumb for 5 seconds then observe how fast color returns to it
How fast should the finger or toe regain normal color
under 2 seconds
