Peripheral Vascular System Flashcards
What is the function of the arteries?
Carry oxygenated, nutrient-rich blood from the heart to the capillaries.
Name the 3 major arteries of the arm.
Brachial, radial, ulnar.
Name the 4 major arteries of the leg.
Femoral, popliteal, dorsalis pedis, posterior tibial.
What is the function of the veins?
Carry deoxygenated, nutrient=depleted, waste-laden blood from the tissues back to the heart.
Name 3 major veins.
Deep veins, superficial veins, perforator veins.
Where would you most likely see deep vein thrombosis (DVT)?
In a deep vein.
Where do we most often see varicose veins?
In the superficial veins, especially in the lower extremities.
Name 3 other veins.
Femoral, poplitea, saphenous veins.
Name 3 major areas of the lymphatic system.
Lymphatic capillaries, lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes.
The lymphatic system forms the connection between the ___ and the ___.
arterioles, venules
Identify 4 risk factors of DVT.
1) Reduced mobility
2) Dehydration
3) Increased viscosity of the blood
4) Venous stasis
What are 3 risk factors for venous stasis?
1) Long periods of standing still/ sitting/ lying down
2) Lack of muscular activity –> blood pools in legs –> pressure on veins
3) Varicose veins –> increase venous pressure
