Arterial Insufficiency (Chronic)
Location: Deep muscle, calf, lower leg, foot
Character: Intermittent claudification (cramp, numbness, tingling, cold)
Onset and Duration: Chronic, gradual after exertion
Aggravating Factors: Activity, elevation
Relieving Factors: Rest, dangling
Assc. Symptoms: Cool, pake skin
Risk: Older, male inherited, HTN, smoking, DM, hypercholesterol, obesity, PVD
Arterial Insufficiency (Acute)
Location: Varies, distal to occlusion, may be entire leg
Character: Throbbing
Onset: Sudden
Assc. Symptoms: 6 P’s- pain, pallor, pulselessness, paresthesia, poikilothermia (coldness), paralysis
Risk: Hx vascular/arterial surgery, abdominal aneurysm, trauma, chronic a-fib
Venous Insufficiency (Chronic)
Location: Lower leg, calf
Character: Aching, tiredness, feeling full
Onset: Increase at end of day
Aggravating Factors: Prolonged standing, sitting
Relieving Factors: Elevation, lying, walking
Assc. Symptoms: Edema, varicosities, weeping ulcers at ankles
Venous Insufficiency (Acute)
Location: Calf
Character: Intense, sharp, deep muscle tender to touch
Onset: Sudden
Aggravating Factors: Pain increase with sharp dorsiflexion of foot
Assc. Symptoms: Red, warm, swollen leg
