Ears, Nose, Mouth, Throat Flashcards
Middle Ear Function
reduce amplitude of sound, pressure equalization
CN VII
Hair cell impulses->nerve receptors->acoustic nerve (sound interpretation)
Conductive Hearing Loss
External or middle ear blocked, excess cerumen, torn TM (otosclerosis)
Sensorineural/Preceptive Loss
Loss of CN VIII, nerve damage, age (presbycusis)
Otitis Media
Middle ear infection, bubbles, trapped pus
Conductive Loss (Weber)
Lateralization of sound to poor ear
Sensorineural Loss (Weber)
Lateralization of sound to good ear
Rinne Test
Air conduction > Bone conduction (AC>BC by 2:1)
Conductive Loss (Rinne)
BC>AC (same or greater)
Sensorineural Loss (Rinne)
AC>BC (same or greater) but ratio is not 2:1
Otosclerosis
Gradual bone formation, impeding transmission of sound gradually (common between 20-40 years old)
Presbycusis
Nerve degeneration in inner ear (60+ years old)
CN XII
Patient stick out tongue, if damaged tongue deviates toward paralyzed side
CN X
Uvula, patient says “ahh”, vibration of uvula phonation
CN IX/X
Gag reflex
