Peripheral Nervous System Flashcards
What is the somatic nervous system responsible for?
The somatic nervous system is responsible for conscious activities, collects information from the surroundings through sensory organs, and coordinates movement of the body.
What does the autonomic nervous system control?
The autonomic nervous system speeds up/slows down functions of the body, prepares your body for emergencies, and controls heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, digestion, and sexual arousal.
What are mechanoreceptors responsible for?
Mechanoreceptors are responsible for detecting touch.
What do photoreceptors detect?
Photoreceptors detect light.
What is the function of thermoreceptors?
Thermoreceptors detect heat.
What do chemoreceptors respond to?
Chemoreceptors respond to chemicals.
What is the difference between the autonomic nervous system and the sympathetic nervous system?
The autonomic nervous system controls involuntary bodily functions, while the sympathetic nervous system is part of the ANS and activates the ‘fight-or-flight’ response.
What role do sensory receptors play in our senses?
Sensory receptors detect stimuli and convert them into signals the brain can interpret.
What are the five senses?
The five senses are sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell.
How can understanding anatomy help with identifying features on diagrams?
Understanding anatomy allows you to identify features on anatomical diagrams.
