Ecosystems Flashcards
What is Ecology?
The study of the relationships between living organisms, including humans, and their physical environment.
What is Environment?
Consists of all the factors in an organism’s surroundings that affect its chances of survival.
What is Habitat?
The place where an organism lives, encompassing its surroundings and the resources it needs to survive.
Example - terrestrial and aquatic habitats.
What is Community?
All the populations of different organisms that live together in an area and interact with each other.
Example - coral reef community.
What is Ecosystem?
A place where the organisms and their physical surroundings form an environment that is different from other environments nearby.
Example - freshwater lake with swans, fish, water plants, and dragonflies.
What is Interdependence?
The relationship between organisms where each affects each other’s survival.
Example - decomposers breaking down the dead organisms.
What is a Natural ecosystem?
Occurs naturally in nature and requires no human activity for its functioning.
Example - ponds, rivers, forests.
What is an Artificial ecosystem?
Human-made structures where biotic and abiotic components are made to interact with each other for survival. It is not self-sustaining and can perish without human help.
Example - aquariums, agriculture fields, zoos.
