Food Chains + Food Webs Flashcards
What is a producer?
An organism that makes its own food, rather than consuming other living things.
Example - algae.
What is a consumer?
An organism that obtains energy by consuming other organisms.
Example - animals.
What is a herbivore?
An animal that primarily eats plants.
Example - koalas, sheep.
What is a carnivore?
An animal that primarily consumes meat or the flesh of other animals.
Example - fish, tigers.
What is a scavenger?
An organism, often a carnivore, that feeds on dead or decaying biomass rather than hunting.
Example - crow, Tasmanian tiger.
What is a detritivore?
An animal that feeds on dead or decaying organic matter from plant or animal sources.
Example - crabs, worms.
What is a decomposer?
An organism that breaks down dead organic matter and releases nutrients back into the environment.
Example - fungi, insects.
What is a parasite?
An organism that lives in or on another organism (its host) and benefits by deriving nutrients at the other’s expense.
Example - tapeworm, leeches.
What is a food chain?
A sequence of organisms through which energy and nutrients are transferred as one organism consumes another.
What is a food web?
A visual representation of the interconnected feeding relationships within an ecosystem.
What makes an ecosystem sustainable?
An ecosystem can provide its own resources for its inhabitants and resources for humans, like water and food.
What is the order of consumers in a food chain?
Producer -> First Order Consumer -> Second Order Consumer -> Third Order Consumer.
What is the relationship between producers and consumers?
Producer + Consumer relationship or Predator + Prey relationship.
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon Dioxide + Water = Glucose + Oxygen.
