Peripheral Nervous System Flashcards
What is a neuromuscular junction?
A synaptic connection between the terminal end of a motor nerve and a muscle
What makes up the peripheral nervous system
Nerves that belong to the somatic and autonomic nervous systems
How many pairs of spinal nerves leave the verterbrae canal?
31
How many pairs of nerves does the cervical section of the spine have?
8
How many pairs of nerves does the throacic section have?
12
How many pairs of nerves does the lumbar section have?
5
How many pairs of nerves does the sacral section have?
5
How many pairs of nerves does the coccygeal section have?
one
What is each nerve formed by?
The union of a motor and a sensory nerve root, making it a mixed nerve.
How many pairs of thoracic nerves are there?
12, the first 11 are intercoastal nerves which pass between the ribs, the 12th are subcostal nerves.
What do the 7th - 12th thoracic nerves also do?
Supply the muscles and the skin of the posterior and anterior abdominal walls.
How many cranial nerves are there?
12
What does the autonomic nervous system do?
controls involuntary body functions.
What are the sections of the autonomic nervous system?
Sympathetic and Parasympathetic.
What do the two sections do?
Work in an intergrated and contemplementary manner to maintain involuntary functions and homeostasis.
Is the effects of autonomic activity rapid?
Yes
What are the effector organs of the autonomic system?
Smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, glands.
In the CNS what are a bundle of nerve fibres called?
tracts
What is the endoneurium regarding nerves?
Delicate tissue surrounding each nerve fibre.
What is the perineurium regarding nerve fibres?
Smooth connective tissue surrounding each bundle of fibres.
What is the epineurium regarding nerve fibres?
Fibrous tissue surrounding and enclosing several branches of nerve fibres. Most large nerves are covered by epineurium.
What is the sympathetic nervous system?
Controls fight or flight response, prepares the body for strenous acitivites.
What is the parasympathetic nervous system?
Regulates rest and digestive functions
How many neurons are involved in the transmission of impulses to the effector organs in the parasympathetic nervous system?
2 - preganglionic and postganglionic
