Peripheral Nervous System Flashcards
what does the PNS consists of?
cranial (12 pairs) and spinal nerves (31 pairs)
function of PNS
Sensory neurons bring signals into the CNS (afferent pathway), and motor neurons carry signals out of the CNS (efferent pathway)
significance of sensory division
consists of somatic and vicsceral sensory nerve fibres. conductt impulses from receptors to CNS
significance of motor division
consists of motor nerve fibres. conducts impulses from the CNS to effectors (muscle and gland)
motor division can be classified into?
somatic nervous system(voluntary) and autonomic nervous sytem(involuntary)
fucntion of somatic NS
conducts impulses from the CNS to skeletal muscle
fuction of autonomic NS
conducts impulses from the CNS to cardiac muscle, smooth muscle and glands
autonomic NS can be classified into?
sympathetic (mobilizes body systems during activity) and parasympathetic (conserves energy and promotes house-keeping fuctions during rest
what is vagus nerve?
the main nerves of your parasympathetic nervous system, innervates neck, thorax and abdomen. responsible for the regulation of internal organ functions, such as digestion, heart rate, and respiratory rate
what is leprosy?
an infection of the peripheral nerves, causes loss of sensation, muscle weakness and loss of vision
what is Guillain-Barré syndrome?
paralysing and life-
threatening disease of the PNS.
Caused by antibodies mistaking
proteins of the bacterium/ virus for
those of the node of Ranvier
what is sensory pathway 1?
perception of proprioception (body position) and touch
what is sensory pathway 2
perception of pain and temperature
what is the neuromuscular junction?
the motor ending pf somatic motor nerves that innervate skeletal muscles
what is myasthenia gravis?
An autoimmune disease of the meurotransmitter junction caused by antibodies that attack componenets of teh postsynaptic membrane.
