PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM Flashcards
bundles of neurons found outside the CNS
Nerves
is a connective tissue sheath that surround each fiber
Endoneurium
wraps groups of fibers bound into a fascicle
Perineurium
binds groups of fascicles
Epineurium
3 kinds of nerves based on structure
Sensory, motor, and mixed nerves
Carry impulse towards the CNS. Contain axons from sensory neurons
Sensory (afferent) nerves
Carry impulses away from the CNS
Motor (efferent) nerves
Contain both sensory and motor fibers
Mixed nerves
name the nerve: smell
Olfactory
name the nerve: vision
Optic
name the nerve: motion of eyeballs and dilation of pupils
Oculomotor
name the nerve: detects touch on face and controls the muscles of mastication
Trigeminal
name the nerve: activates facial muscles and controls the anterior third
Facial
name the nerve: inner ear, hearing, and balance
Vestibulocochlear
name the nerve: pharynx, swallowing, and posterior third
Glossopharyngeal
name the nerve: pharynx, larynx, abdominal, thoracic region, and control of me digestive tract
Vagus
name the nerve: control the muscles of the neck (sternocleidomastoid and trapezius)
Accessory
name the nerve: movement of the tongue
Hypoglossal
surrounds the central canal, which is filled with cerebrospinal fluid
Gray matter
house interneurons. Receive information from sensory neurons in the dorsal root; cell bodies housed in dorsal root ganglion
Dorsal (posterior) horns
house motor neurons of the somatic (voluntary) nervous system. Send information out ventral root
Ventral (anterior) horns
Network of nerves formed from the ventral rami of the cervical, lumbar and sacral regions. Serves as the sensory and motor needs of the limbs
Plexus
Axons extends to skeletal muscles that are served and motor neuron cell bodies originate inside the CNS
Somatic nervous system
2 arms of the autonomic nervous system
sympathetic and parasympathetic division
cell body lies within the CNS. its axons synapses with the second motor neuron in the terminal ganglia
Preganglionic neuron
preganglionic neurons originate in:
- Cranial nerves III, VII, IX, and X
- S2 through S4 regions of the spinal cord
Parasympathetic
preganglionic neuron originate from T1 through L2
Sympathetic
axon extends to the visceral organs
Postganglionic neuron
