What are the indications for periodontal surgery?
A
- Re-evaluation, >4 weeks after completing non-surgical phase
- Pockets >5mm persist
- Excellent OH

What surgery is performed?
A
Open flap curettage (debridement)

Outline the procedure
A
- Flap design
- Gingivae incision & flap retraction
- Granulation tissue removed
- RSD (hand or [powered)
- Flap replaced and sutured

What are the post-operative instructions given?
A
- CHX mw 1-2 weeks
- Analgesia
- AB if inficiated
- Remove sutures after 1 week
- Re-evaluate

What are the possible bony defects?
A
aka vertical bone defect, angular bone defect
- One bone wall
- Two bone wall
- Three bone wall

How are infrabony defects managed?
A
- Closed/ open RSD = healing by repair (re-attach long JE)
- Pocket elimination wit ossesous resection = removing bone defect and moving gingiva apically
- Regenerative techniques

What are the disadvantages of pocket elimination surgery?
A
- Unaesthetic
- Exposed root sensitivity
- Removal of supporting bone
