What are the signs of ANUG?

A
  1. Punched-out ulcers affecting interdental papillae and gingival margins
  2. Ulcers with greyish slough, can be wiped away –> bleeding
  3. Necrosis of gingival tissue (rather pocketing)

How is ANUG managed?

A
  • Ultrasonic debridement
  • OHI
  • 0.2% CHS mw
  • 6% hydrogen peroxide mw until symptoms subsides
  • AB only if systemic
    • -> Metronidazole 200mg 3x daily for 3 days

A
  • Pain on biting
  • Swelling
  • Discharge (-> halitosis)

  • Suppuration via sinus/ pocket

How is a periodontal abscess managed?

A
  • Drainage = incision/ via pocket (dilate with instrument)
  • Gentle sub-gingival debridement
  • Hot saline mw
  • Extr poor prognosis teeth
  • AB only if systemic –> HPT, surgery if indicated and maintenance

Amoxicillin 500mg 3x daily for 5 days
