Periodontal reassessment Flashcards
Why must the reassessment be explained to the patient and emphasised as part of the treatment plan?
As periodontitis is non-curable they are at risk of persisting or reoccurring so important to ensure disease is controlled.
(By explaining at start patient is aware of the long term commitment )
3 main purposes of reassessment
- To see how effective the therapy has been
- To see if risks have been controlled (OH, smoking, diabetes)
- To see the need for further therapy
When ideally should reassessment be done
3 months has been shown to show greatest improvements in pocket depths
Why should we not wait long for reassessment like 9 months
without professional follow up support patient may relapse
Why should we need to wait at least 6 weeks for reassessment?
Due to histological changes
How long does reestablishment of the junctional epithelium take
1- 2 weeks
How long does connective tissue take to repair following initial therapy?
4-8 weeks
How long can subgingival repopulation take to occur after initial therapy if there is inadequate plaque control - risk of progression
2 months
What is an adequate time to assess patients long term plaque control
4 - 8 weeks
During supportive periodontal therapy, reassessment of periodontitis patients should take at least ………… to monitor disease ……… or ……….
