Gingival recession Flashcards
How does recession occur
Recession occurs from an outcome of inflammation
What type of causes can gingival recession occur from
List 5
mechanical - brushing
trauma
physical
microbiological
immunological
List 4 ways to elminate the cause of recession
- OHI - how frequent toothbrush and technique
- deal with inflammatory stimulus
- eliminate bacteria
- Reposition teeth: ortho/extractions
How is clinically recession measured
Amount of exposed root
Depth - from EDJ to apical part
Width - mesial to distal
Class I recession
bone loss?
respond to treatment?
marginal tissue recession which does not extend to mucogingival junction. No bone loss - responds good to treatment (80-100%)
Class II recession
bone loss?
respond to treatment?
marginal tissue recession extends to or beyond mucogingival junction. No bone loss.
Possible to achieve good root coverage after treatment (80-100%)
Class III recession
bone loss?
respond to treatment?
marginal tissue recession extends to or beyond mucogingival junction. Bone loss interdentally and soft tissue loss.
Partial root coverage is possible after treatment (50-70%)
Class IV recession
bone loss?
respond to treatment?
marginal tissue recession extends beyond mucogingival junction. Severe bone/soft tissue loss. Root coverage is limited after treatment (<10%) mostly in perio pts.
What type of measurements can be used to monitor recession, list 4
- measurement by periodontal probe
- study models
- photographs
- radiographs
What’s it important to keep asking patient and checking
Keep asking for signs/symptoms
sensitivity
aesthetics
caries
What are we trying to achieve when dealing with recession
Provide keratinised tissue
When would we provide root coverage treatment? list 3
aesthetics
sensitivity
caries
What 2 non-surgical periodontal treatments can be done to help with appearance of gingival recession
- composite (mustn’t affect pts OH)
- removable gingival veneer
What are the 3 grafting surgical treatments for gingival recession
- pedicle graft
- free gingival graft
- connective tissue graft
What grafts is it when the tissue moved does NOT have a blood supply when relocated, relies on recipients site to re-vascularise the graft
Free gingival graft
Connective tissue graft
