Periodicity Flashcards
what are special about groups in periodic table
same properties
same outer electron number
how does reactivity effect periodic table
- s block is more reactive going down
- transition elements are unreactive
what are special about periods in the periodic table
same number of shells
in period 3 what groups lose their outer electrons and why
123 all giant structures
what is the trend across period 3
groups 123 are metallically bonded so increases, 4 giant macro molecular structures and 567 are molecular covalent bonds and bigger vvw force is the higher the melting point
what is special about atomic radii
tells us about the size of the atom
why does the radii decrease across a period
protons are added to the nucleus and electrons to the outer main level, which pulls electrons closer to the nucleus.
why does the radii increase down a group
have one extra complete main level shell
why does the first ionization energy increase across a period
number of protons increase in nucleus and the main level shell gains an electron which increase the charger therefore harder to remove
why does the first ionisation decrease down a group
the outer electron is further away from nucleus therefore less attracted
why is there a drop from one period to the next in ionization
a new main level starts and so there is an increase in atomic radius
