Group 2 ,alkaline earth metals Flashcards
what happens to atomic radius as you go down group 2
atomic radius gets larger due to extra electron shells
what happens to first ionisation energies as you go down the group
decrease down the group due to the extra shell what the period below has
what happens to melting points down the group
decrease as they typically have metallic structures with positive ions surrounded by delocalized electrons
what happens when group 2 react with water
they are oxidised to +2, and form metal hydroxides and hydrogen which react more readily as you go down
how does magnesium react with water
reacts slowly with cold water but rapidly with steam
how does calcium, strontium, barium react with water
reacts vigorously
how is magnesium used in extraction of titanium
reduces the titanium chloride in a furnace at almost 1000c
what are the solubilities of hydroxides of Mg-Ba
Mg is least soluble Ba is most
how is barium sulfate used in medicine
barium helps with x-rays as its opaque to them and patient take barium meals which coats the tissue making them show up
what is calcium hydroxide used for
- agriculture to neutralise acid soils
- indigestion tablets
how is calcium used to remove SO2
by making a slurry and spraying onto the flue gasses
how is barium sulfate used to test for sulfate ions
the solution is acidified with acid, then BaCl solution is added to the solution under the test and if a sulfate is present a precipitate forms.
What happens to the solubility of sulfates as u go from mg to ba
Increases from ba to mg
