periodicity Flashcards
how is the periodic table arranged? (3 ways)
by increasing atomic (proton) number
in periods (horizontal rows) showing repeating trends in physical/chemical properties
in groups (vertical columns) with similar chemical properties and the same number of outer shell electrons
what is periodicity?
a repeating trend in an element’s properties e.g. ionisation energy, electron configuration
what do the blocks of the periodic table correspond to? name the blocks
s, p, d, f
blocks correspond to the highest energy sub shell in an element
describe the position of each block in the periodic table
s- left of periodic table, group 1 and 2
d- middle of periodic table, transition elements
p- right of periodic table, groups 3-8
f- bottom of periodic table, lanthanides/actinides
