Periodic Trends Flashcards
What is the scale for Electronegativity?
The Pauling Scale
What is the trend for Electronegativity?
Left to right becomes more electronegative
bottom to top becomes more electronegative
except for lanthanides and actinides
What are the lathanides?
Elements 57 through 70
What are the actinides?
Elements 89 through 102
What are the the horizontal rows known as?
Periods
What are the vertical columns known as?
Groups
What is the trend for Ionization Energy?
Left to Right Increasing Ionization Energy
Bottom to Top Increasing Ionization Energy
What is Ionization energy?
Ionization energy is the energy required to remove an electron from a neutral atom in its gaseous phase. Conceptually, ionization energy is the opposite of electronegativity. The lower this energy is, the more readily the atom becomes a cation.
What is the trend for Atomic radius?
Left to Right decreases Atomic Radius
Bottom to Top Decreases Atomic Radius
What is the Atomic Radius?
Half the distance between two atoms bonded together
What the Alkali Metals
Group 1 except for Hydrogen
What are the Alkaline Earth Metals?
Group 2
What are the Transition Metals?
Groups 3 through 12
What are the Basic Metals?
Group 13 from Aluminum down
Group 14 from tin down
Group 15 from Bismuth down
and ununhexium
What are the semi metals?
Boron, silicon, germanium, arsenic, antimony, telerium, and polonium (they border the metals and non-metals)
