Periodic table and reactivity * Flashcards
What are the columns in the periodic table called?
groups
What are the rows in the periodic table called?
periods
What are the two main sections of the periodic table?
Which is on the left and which is on the right?
metals (left)
non-metals (right)
What are the elements between groups 2 and 3 called? (in the middle)
transition metals
What is group 1 made up of?
alkali metals
What is group 7 made up of?
halogens
What is group 0 made up of?
noble gases
What does the group number show about the structure of an eatom?
the number of electrons on the outer shell
What does the period number show about the structure of an atom?
the number of shells
What are the noble gases?
helium
neon
argon
krypton
xenon
Why are noble gases unreactive?
they are inert/unreactive as they contain a full outer shell so they do not need to gain or lose electrons
Are noble gases metals or non-metals?
metals
What happens to the nobel gases as you go further down the group?
they become more dense and their boiling point increases
What is a displacement reaction?
in a displacement reaction the more reactive element displaces the less reactive element from its compound
What do these displacement reactions produce?
metal + acid –>
metal + cold water –>
metal + steam –>
metal + salt solution –>
metal + acid –> metal salt + hydrogen
metal + cold water –> metal hydroxide + hydrogen
metal + steam –> metal oxide + hydrogen
metal + salt solution –> metal + metal salt solution
