Periodic Table Flashcards
(Whats an Element, How elements are organized in the PT)
Element
- A type of atom
- a substance made up of only one type of atom
Periodic Table
a table of every type of atom every discovered/proposed
What does a pattern mean?
something that repeats in a predictable manner
Periodic table is a graphic organizer
-sorts elements in specific ways
-makes it easier to see different patterns/relationships between elements
Periodic table organizes elements into
- Atomic number
- Groups and periods
- metal & non-metals
- Reactive & stable
- How are elements organized via atomic number?
In increasing atomic number from left to right
- Difference between group and period?
Group: a vertical column
Period: a horizontal column
Groups tell us the..
amount of valence electrons
Periods tell us the..
amount of electronic shells
- Periodic Table sorts elements into metals & non-metals
A Zig Zag boundary divides periodic table into
1. Metallic atoms(on the left)
2. Non-metallic atoms(on the right)
- Periodic Table sorts elements into reactive and stable
-Elements in Group 8 are classified as stable
-Elements not in Group 8 are classified as reactive
