Bonds Flashcards
Bonds form between atoms because…
it gives atoms an opportunity to change number of electrons in their valence shell
AS A RESULT:
atoms achieve stability
Why do atoms form bonds with each other?
To become stable
Bonds arent physical, their relationships
Types of chemical bonds:
- Metallic
- Ionic
- Covalent(molecular)
Metallic Bonds:
- metal atom 1 transfers its electrons to metal atom 2
- simultaneously, metal atom 2 transfers its electrons to metal atom 1
AS A RESULT:
-A Metallic bond is formed but,
NO NEW PARTICLE OR COMPOUND IS FORMED
Metallic bonds are constantly passing electrons to each other. Whats keeping them together?
A metal plus a metal repel each other. whats keeping them together is their negative charge between them, caused by shared electrons
Metallic bond:
a strong electrostatic force of attraction between
1. positively charged nuclei
2. a sea of de-localized electrons
Ionic Bonds:
- metal atom approaches non-metal atom
- metal atom transfers its electrons to non-metal atom
AS A RESULT:
-An ionic bond is formed
A NEW PARTICLE OR COMPOUND IS FORMED
(called “formula unit” or “ionic compound”)
Ionic Bond
a strong electrostatic force of attraction between
1. positively charged ions
and
2. negatively charged ions
Write the same of the particle an nitrogen atom becomes once it achieves stability
Nitride ion
Covalent Bonds:
-non-metal atom 1 approaches non-metal atom 2
-both non-metal atom pair up their unpaired electrons
AS A RESULT:
- A covalent bond is formed
A NEW PARTICLE IS FORMED
(Molecule)
what makes up a covalent bond?
sharing electrons so both non-metallic atoms are balanced
Covalent Bond:
a strong electrostatic force of attraction between
1. positively charged nucleus
and
2. a negatively charged, localized shared-pair of electrons
Isoelectronic
same number of electrons
Compound
something made up of 2 or more elements
