Jamestown
First successful British colony, founded in 1607 by John Smith.
Starving Time
The winter of 1609-1610 in Jamestown where almost the entire colony was wiped out.

An economic arrangement where a number of investors pool their capital for investment.
House of Burgesses
The first representative assembly in the colonies. ran from 1619-1776.
Indentured Servants
People who had their way to the colonies paid for by rich people in return for years of labor and work.
Act of Toleration
Act passed in Maryland in 1649 that promoted freedom of religion.
Headright System
“Refer a friend” type of system where Britain gave away 50 acres of land to people who brought others to the colonies.
Bacon’s Rebellion
A rebellion in Jamestown to protest a disagreement with Natives over land.
Middle Passage
The travel across the ocean from Africa to the colonies for slaves.
Slave Codes
Laws created to protect white slave owners from rebellion from slaves.
Stono Rebellion
20 slaves in South Carolina got weapons and marched on white owners in 1739.
Bread Basket
Nickname for the middle colonies due to their large farms and surplus of food.
Charter of Liberties
A charter signed by William Penn that established a representative assembly in Pennsylvania.
Mayflower Compact
A contract made by the people on the Mayflower where they agreed to form a simple democracy. Introduced democratic selection to the colonies.
Antinominism
The belief that faith alone, not good deeds, was all that was needed for salvation.
Pequot War
An armed conflict where Massachusetts, Plymouth, and some Native tribes fought against the Pequot Tribe.
Navigation Acts
A list of rules from England that limited trade to and from the colonies to exclusively Britain.
Glorious Revolution
The English revolution that took King James II out of power, and put Mary and William in charge.
Salutary Neglect
A period where Britain did not strictly enforce Parliament’s laws in the colonies.
“City on a Hill”
John Winthrop’s sermon claiming that Boston will be viewed as a City on a Hill to act as a religious example to the rest of the world.
Fundamental Orders of Conneticuit
A constitution created bu the Connecticut River colonists at an open meeting. Was the first constitution in the colonies.
King Philip’s War
A war led by Metacom (King Philip) over the lack of respect from colonists over Native American’s land.
