When should routine screening for depression, anxiety and psychosocial risk factors occur?
As early as practical antenatally
repeat at least once later in pregnancy
again 6-12 weeks postnatal
at least once again in first postnatal year
What is an abnormal EPDS score?
10-12: repeat in 2-4 weeks
13 or higher = arrange further assessment.
How would you screen for psychosocial risk factors? When is this recommended?
ANRQ tool. As early as practical in pregnancy.
List conservative measures to optimise mental wellbeing
smoking/alcohol and drug cessation
family violence screening and supports
utilise whanau/friends supports
sleep advice
Prevalence of ‘baby blues’
80% 3-5 days postnatal. Transient and self limiting
Prevalence of anxiety and depression during pregnancy?
10% during pregnancy, 1/7 in the year after birth.
Incidence of puerperal psychosis?
1/1000
What is the incidence of perinatal mental health disorders in men/partners?
10%
