Performance Flashcards
What is the temperature lapse rate?
2 degrees per 1000ft
What are the standard temperature, pressure and density at sea level?
15C, 1013mb, 1.0225 kg/m^3
What is the pressure lapse rate?
1mb per 30ft
Is lift higher on hot or cold days?
Cold
Is lift performance best at high or low altitudes? Why?
Low, due to higher atmospheric pressure.
What is the definition of pressure height?
The height in ISA that corresponds to the pressure of the current environment, i.e. Pressure Height = elevation +(1013-QNH)*30ft where QNH is the pressure at mean sea level.
In other words, take the actual pressure at sea level, subtract it from the standard sea level pressure, multiply by the lapse rate and use it to correct the actual elevation so that you pick a height that would have the pressure you were currently experiencing if sea level pressure really were 1013 on the day in question.
What is QNH
The pressure at mean sea level for a particular location and time (it varies over time)
What is BEW
Basic empty weight - the airframe and fixed equipment (no fuel or oil)
Define Operating Weight
Operating weight is the same as basic empty weight, but adjusted for the aircraft’s configuration for a particular operation. For example seats are removed for skydiving.
What is ZFW
Zero fuel weight - everything except fuel (includes passengers, baggage etc). It does include unuseable fuel though.
What is the Ramp Weight
The weight at startup; it includes fuel, passengers, baggage etc.
Which can be greater? Ramp weight or MTOW and why?
Ramp weiht can exceed the maximum takeoff weight by the amount of fuel used to taxi.
What is MTOW?
The maximum takeoff weight for the aircraft for the environmental conditions, runway length and undercarriage.
Define MLW and how it relates to MTOW
Maximum landing weight is the maximum weight for a safe landing for a particular runway length and environmental conditions. It is usually the same as. MTOW for light aircraft.
What is the floor loading limit?
The maximum pressure the baggage compartment floor can take without damage.
