Q

Is lift performance best at high or low altitudes? Why?

A

Low, due to higher atmospheric pressure.

Q

What is the definition of pressure height?

A

The height in ISA that corresponds to the pressure of the current environment, i.e. Pressure Height = elevation +(1013-QNH)*30ft where QNH is the pressure at mean sea level.

In other words, take the actual pressure at sea level, subtract it from the standard sea level pressure, multiply by the lapse rate and use it to correct the actual elevation so that you pick a height that would have the pressure you were currently experiencing if sea level pressure really were 1013 on the day in question.

Q

Define Operating Weight

A

Operating weight is the same as basic empty weight, but adjusted for the aircraft’s configuration for a particular operation. For example seats are removed for skydiving.

Q

What is ZFW

A

Zero fuel weight - everything except fuel (includes passengers, baggage etc). It does include unuseable fuel though.

11
Q

Which can be greater? Ramp weight or MTOW and why?

A

Ramp weiht can exceed the maximum takeoff weight by the amount of fuel used to taxi.

13
Q

Define MLW and how it relates to MTOW

A

Maximum landing weight is the maximum weight for a safe landing for a particular runway length and environmental conditions. It is usually the same as. MTOW for light aircraft.

15
Q

What is TORA

A

Take Off Run Available (length of runway)

16
Q

What is the Takeoff Run?

A

The distance the wheels remain on the ground

17
Q

Why is TODR more than TORA?

A

Takeoff is complete at 50ft so the takeoff distance available includes obstacle clearance to reach 50 ft.

18
Q

What is LDA?

A

Landing distance available (length of runway)

19
Q

What are two acronyms which refer to the length of the runway?

A

LDA and TORA

20
Q

What is the TODA?

A

The distance actually required to reach 50ft

21
Q

LDR is the distance required to do what and from where?

A

Come to a full stop from 50ft.

22
Q

The P charts are used to calculate what? What are the factors to include in a P chart reading?

A

The weight limits for a particular strip (or by working backwards, the TODR). You incorporate wind direction and strength, slope, density and runway surface.

23
Q

What is the name for the distance needed to reach a full stop from 50ft?

A

LDR
