Engines Flashcards
What are the four strokes of a 4-stroke engine called?
Induction, compression, combustion and exhaust
The crankshaft is connected to the
Propeller
The pressure in the inlet valve is controlled by the
Throttle
The force acting in the cylinder depends on the temperature reached during which phase?
Combustion
The carburetor mixes fuel int air according to the speed of what?
Airflow
What is a typical avgas fuel:air ratio?
1:14
Mixture may be run lean at altitude because higher air is what?
Less dense
By using a leaner mix, the aircraft range is (increased or decreased)?
Increased
In an ultralight, carby heat should be avoided when taxying because the air is what?
Unfiltered
The fuel system’s vent lets what flow into the fuel tank?
Air
The fuel drain allows inspection for what?
Fuel contamination
Fuel detonation can occur if fuel is too what?
Hot
What avgas is dyed blue?
100LL
What fuel is dyed red
MOGAS
Clear fuel is named what?
AVTUR
Avgas 100 is dyed what colour?
Green
Black smoke can be a sign of a mixture that is too what?
Rich
A high CHT may indicate what sort of mixture?
Lean
A gradual loss of power in a fixed pitch propeller aircraft indicates what?
Carburettor ice
The throttle controls the pressure in the what valve?
Inlet valve
The temperature reached during the combustion phase relates to the force within what?
Cylinder
If the mixture is too lean, it will be indicated onwhich instrument?
CHT
What is the colour of Mogas?
Red
100LL is dyed what colour and what does the LL stand for?
Blue, low lead
The cams push against what?
Pushrods
What is used to generate the high voltage for the spark plugs?
Magnetos.
Why does power reduce when one magneto is off?
Each magneto fires one of two sparkplugs in each cylinder. When a magneto fails, only one of the two plugs fires resulting in less efficient combustion.
In a long period of idling, why can power output reduce slightly in a horizontally arranged engine? How is it corrected?
Oil leaks into a cylinder. When it is not running hot enough to burn the oil, it can pool near one of the plugs, gathering across the terminals and preventing a spark. Leaning the mixture and increasing the power will raise the cylinder temperature and burn the oil.
Where is electrical power sourced before the engine fires and after it fires?
Battery and alternator
What gas is released by a lead acid battery?
Hydrogen
How is the system protected from a current surge?
Circuit breakers
What happens if the voltage gets too high?
A warning light is illuminated.
Why is the engine periodically heated in an extended glide?
To clear carbon buildup from the rich mixture at low power
If Carburettor heat were applied at takeoff, what would the effect be on the mixture?
Too rich due to reduced ram effect
An exhaust gas temperature gauge responds to what?
Mixture strength
