Ignition System Flashcards
Where does the high voltage for the sparkplugs originate?
In the magnetos
If the electrical system fails, do the spark plugs contine to fire?
Yes. Magnetos require no external electrifal power.
How does the magneto switch disable a magneto?
By diverting it to the earth
What is the role of the impulse coupling?
The impulse coupling supplies power to tge magnetos during startup until they are spinning fast enough to generate a spark.
Is the sparkplugs become fouled by oil, what should the pilot do?
Lean the mixture and increase power to increase the cylinder temperature and burn the oil.
Under what circumstances can oil gather around the terminals?
During long periods of idling for example, when the cylinders are insufficiently hot to burn the oil, especially in a horizontally aligned engine.
How is the battery charged?
From the alternator
Why is the lead acid battery placed into a battery compartment?
In case of acid leakage.
How is the system protected from excess current?
Fuses or circuit breakers
What happens when voltage is too high? What should the pilot do?
A warning light illuminates; turn off the alternator and land as soon as possible.
Why are there two magnetos?
Redundancy and extra efficiency of combustion
What device keeps voltage at the correct level?
The regulator
If an ammeter reads zero, what does this indicate?
Alternator failure
What first powers the magnetos on startup?
Impulse coupling
