perceptual development (cognitive) Flashcards
what are visual cues?
things in visual line that are used to determine distance
what is depth perception?
ability to see objects in 3D rather than the 2D that hits the retina
what is perception built on?
experiences and cultural norms
what are examples of depth cues?
- relative size = judge how far away something is based on size of other objects
- texture gradient = how detailed something is determines how close it is
How old are infants when depth cues develop?
around 5 months
what is pattern perception and when does it develop?
process of identifying complex forms and shapes = 3-4 months
what is face perception and when does it develop?
ability to recognise a face in a visual scene = around 7 months
what are constancies and when do they develop?
tendency to percieve familiar items as standard shapes and sizes no matter stimuli changes = 6 months
What are ways of investigating perceptual development?
1- habituation / gazing task = how bored babies get when seeing new stimuli
2- preferential looking = drawn to shapes that resemble contrasts of a face
3- pyshiocogical measures e.g., heart rate and brain scans
4- deprivation tasks = free kitten vs yoked kitten = yoked kitten had poorer perceptual skills
How does going from crawling to walking impact the depth perception of infants?
have to re-learn depth perception when start walking
