application: perceptual development Flashcards
What are types of perception that are developed?
- auditory perceptual constancy
- visual perception
- shape constancy and perception
- visual memory
- sound conceptualising
- auditory memory
what are 4 typical games are played in nursery’s that aid perceptual development?
1- What is in the bag?
2- Shape sorting cube
3- Baby gm
4- Animal noise bingo
What perception does animal noise bingo help develop?
auditory perception skills
what perception does a shape sorting cube help develop?
perception of touch
why is children play essential?
interaction with the environment and stimulates development of skills
What is the key application?
Sensory integrative play (SI therapy)
What is the theory behind SI therapy?
Ayres believes that developing a multi-sensory perception = best strategy
What are the steps to SI therapy?
1- initial assessment = identifies sensory issues through standardised testing
2- personalised treatment programme
what are SI programmes designed to be?
- fun
- seem like every day play
- not seem like a chore - requires intrinsic motivation - rewarding
What are some examples of playful SI activities (& what skills do they encourage)?
- using brushes on the skin = encourage touch & hand-eye coordination
- sitting / rolling on bouncy ball = encourage vision and balance
- being squeezed between exercise pads = encourage understanding of pressure and movement
- dancing to different types of music = encourage sound and movement
How is effectiveness of SI therapy measured?
verbal feedback from child OR behavioural outcomes e.g., attention building or improvements in perceptual abilities
How does SI therapy actually work?
providing stimulation of the senses to encourage the development of them
what are strengths of SI therapy?
- standardised pre-tests = reliable
- no PFH issues - fun
- very useful (PA) - intervention for struggling children - parents and teachers
- ecological validity - designed to be like every day play
- personalised treatment = removes internal individual differences
what are the weaknesses of SI therapy?
- few studies show positive results = not effective - only effective is chid has intrinsic motivation
- verbal feedback may be less valid - child not understand and demand characteristics
- small samples - age bias - critical period to when toys are effective
- ethnocentric - western bias
