Perception/ Sensation Flashcards
Examples of sensation include:
vision, hearing, touch, taste, position sense
How does sensation occur?
Sensory organs absorb physical stim. Receptors convert energy into impulses to send to brain. Perception follows
Auditory figure- ground?
Ability to discriminate sounds in foreground and background
Directionality
Awareness of left, right, forward, back etc
Figure-ground perception:
ability to perceive a figure in foreground from background
Form Constancy:
recognition of shape
Kinesthesia:
Awareness of body position in regards to space
Proprioception
unconsciousness awareness coming from muscles, joints etc. (position sense)
Stereognosis:
identify objets by touch
How is perception assessed?
- Formal/ Standardized assessments
- Observation
- Reports
Agnosia
unable to identify object by looking at it. (but would know what to do with object)
Prosopagnosia
inability to recognize faces, but can recognize voice
Asomatognosia
loss of body scheme
Praxis/ Apraxia
ability to plan motor movement and inability
4 different types of apraxia?
Ideational apraxia- errors in task
Ideomotor- errors in motor
Constructional- can’t copy design
Dressing- cant dress
Homonymous Hemianopsia
loss of half a field of vision in each eye
Signs/ Symptoms of HH
bumping into things, startled by objects, panic attacks in busy places, eye not working etc
Unilateral or hemi-neglect
unawareness of left (usually) side of body
Signs and symptoms of neglect:
no awareness in hemi field, doesn’t see out of one eye, bumps into things on affected side
Treatment strategies visual deficits:
encourage eye/ head movements to neglected side, have family sit on neglected side, ambulate toward neglected side
