Parkinson’s
degeneration of neurons in substantia nigra
Between ages 50-70
3 major symptoms
Bradykinesia
Muscle Rigidity
Resting tremor
other symptoms
mask-like face, pill rolling
Early signs
hand tremor, fine motor difficulty, heaviness/ stiffness in limbs
Later signs
stooped posture, loss of arm swing, freezing, shuffling gait, monotone speech
Precautions
poor proprioception and balance.
Orthostatic hypotension
Skin breakdown-
Freezing symptom
inability to move feet. Affects 1/3 of clients
Tips for how to deal with freezing
Provide calm verbal support
Encourage slow deep breathing
Guide with a light touch to the arm or shoulder
Tips for dressing
meds prior to dressing,
use velcro
clothes near by
ones that have slippery material
Tips for writing
Large or built up pen
stretch frequently
felt tips offer less resistance
