Perception Flashcards
What is Gestalt Psychology?
brains creating coherent perceptual experiences – what allows for optical illusions to work
Figure and Ground
Determining figure from the background
ex: that black and white vase
Grouping
the tendency to organize stimuli
Form Perception: Proximity
Grouping nearby figures together
Form Perception: Closure
filling in gaps to create a whole
ex: that panda drawing
Form Perception: Similarity
Grouping similar figures together
Form Perception: Continuity
We perceive continuous patterns (lines overlapping)
Form Perception: Connectedness
Perceiving patterns as a single unit
ex: two dots connected by a bar
What is depth perception?
what enables us to judge distances
what are binocular cues?
the fact that we have two eyes to perceive depth
what is retinal disparity?
the difference between our two eyes
what is convergence?
when our eyes converge to look at an object close to our face
What are monocular cues?
cues used to see with only one eye or 2d images.
horizontal-vertical illusion
seeing vertical as longer than horizontal
relative height
if something is higher in the field of vision, it is further away.
relative size
objects of similar size that look smaller are further away.
interposition
objects that block other objects are closer
linear perspective
parallel lines that appear to converge are getting further away
relative motion
objects closer to fixation point appear to move faster in opposite direction
light and shadow
nearby objects reflect more light
what is stroboscopic motion?
motion created by a series of still pictures
what is the phi phenomenon?
motion created by flashing lights
ex: Christmas lights
What is a perceptual set?
a bias or readiness to perceive certain aspects of illusions/other sensory data
what is a schema?
used to organize and interpret unfamiliar information
a framework that helps interpret information
what is perceptual constance?
ability to reorganize objects without being confused by change in shape size or color
what is perceptual adaptation?
adapting to your surroundings? (ex: goggles)
what are context effects?
having context change the meaning of certain things
