Perception Flashcards
Perception
process of organizing and interpreting sensory information
Top-Down Processing
when we use our experiences to make a quick judgement of what we expect to see
Bottom-Up Processing
we only use features of the object to complete our perceptions
Schemas
mental container we build to help our experiences
Perceptual Sets
what we expect to see, which influences what we do see
Perceptual Constancy
ability to see objects as appearing the same even under different lighting, distances and angles
Apparent Movement
when images are presented then taken away fast creating perception of continuous motion
Relative Clarity
objects that appear sharper, clearer, and more detailed are perceived as being closer than objects that appear hazy and blurry
Relative Size
know to interpret objects as farther away when they appear smaller, and vice versa
Texture Gradient
the closer an object is the more detail we can see (gives clues about distance of object)
Linear Perspective
parallel lines appear to converge in the distance
Interposition
when an object is blocking the view of another, we assume the object blocking is closer to us
Monocular Depth Cues
use one eye to perceive distance
Closure
our brains fill in the gaps of missing information to complete the figure/object
Figure Ground
we pick out objects and figures that stand out against the background
