What is the presentation of peptic ulcers?
A
Epigastric discomfort/pain
Nausea and vomiting
Dyspepsia
Bleeding causing haematemesis “coffee ground” vomit and melaena
Iron deficiency anaemia

What is the gold standard investigation for an ulcer?
A
Endoscopy (in which a raid urease test can be performed to detect H. Pylori and a biopsy for cancer)

What medications are used to treat ulcers?
A
Same as GORD
PPI’s
H2RA’s
2 antibiotics if H. Pylori to eradicate

What are the complications of ulcer?
A
Bleeding
Perforation (peritonitis)
Scarring and strictures (pyloric stenosis)
